INTRODUCTION

I am the vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him produces much fruit, because you can do nothing without me. JOHN 15:5

In today’s culture, it’s easy for leaders to link their identity to the titles and roles they hold, or to the skills, charisma, strategy, or influence they possess.

For a Christian leader to lead, it requires us to first know who makes us able to lead. It all starts with who you are in Christ.

Your core identity is not what or who you lead. True leadership does not begin with what we do. It begins with who we are in Christ.

A Christian leader’s identity is found in Christ, in his family, and in our place in his church.

Leaders should have a clear understanding of what and way leading. This strong sense of purpose keeps us focused and motivated. Often such visionary leadership can prioritise power and authority

A Christian leader gets their what and why, their purpose, from God. It is more than aligning our purposes with God’s, it’s making sure our purposes are defined and formed by God’s will.

INTRODUCTION

For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared ahead of time for us to do. EPHESIANS 2:10

A Christian leader is formed by God. A formation established in the power of the Holy Spirit, the truth of His word, within the life of the church, and the experiences we are placed in.

Leaders are formed by being and doing. It is stepping into the leader God has created you to be, and into the opportunities and purposes he has shaped for you.

As ones made by God, led by God, and led by God’s purposes, we are the formed as we serve. This helps us understand how we are created, what our limits are, and how God is growing us.

INTRODUCTION

…since what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them. ROMANS 1:19

A Christian leader must know God. We can only know God because He makes Himself known to us. It is this self-revelation that we call theology.

Theology means theos (God) and logos (word). Word about God.

Christian leaders are formed by their theology. Whenever we speak about God, when we reflect on what we believe, we are engaged in theology. Every Christian leader is a theologian.

As ones made by God, led by God, led by God’s purposes, and formed by God, it is the responsibility of all Christian leaders to deepen their knowledge, understanding and experience of who God is and so who we are in relationship to God.

It is God who is to form the theology of a Christians leader.
