As disciples of the Lord Jesus how should we use our time? What are our priorities for 2017?

God, our Heavenly Father, is not related to time, He is outside of it, and independent of it. He knows the end from the beginning. This is why He can tell us about the future, and in the Bible he regularly does this!

It is important to note that we are only ever going to have time on our hands while we are living on this earth. In eternity there is no time.

The following headings from 1 Peter, chapter 4 provide some guidance regarding the use of time.

Our attitude concerning sin (v 1-3)

Jesus set His mind to winning a total victory over sin and death on our behalf. Therefore, I must not take sin lightly. Sin always conflicts with the will of God. Therefore we must invest “the rest of our earthly life” in seeking to please Him and to do His will.

Our attitude toward people in the world (v 4, 5)

The awful truth is that those who live in sin will meet terrible judgment unless they repent. Therefore, be patient should they taunt you, don’t argue, earnestly pray for them.

Our attitude toward Christ’s return (v 7)

An expectant attitude toward Christ’s return involves a serious, balanced mind, and an alert, awake prayer life (see also 2 Peter 3:3-4; 9-10). Jesus said to Peter years before "Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come." (Matthew 24:42)

Our attitude toward our church family members (v 8-11)

We are called to love and serve one another. Our love should be:

  • Fervent: Christian love means that we treat others the way God treats us.

  • Forgiving: Does not condone sin, but rather covers it by not spreading it around.

  • Practical: Sharing our homes in hospitality (as we are able), and using our various gifts to minister to one another.

At the beginning of 2017 let’s continue to love one another, be hospitable, and serve our King by serving His people. This is a wise way to use our time.

How long is “the rest of your earthly life”? Only God knows.

Don’t waste it! Invest it by doing the will of God.
