THE CURE FOR A TROUBLED HEART John 14:1-14

Only through Jesus can we believe in God and have the confidence to come to God with what troubles our hearts because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

What troubles you? What is it that bounces around in your mind and keeps you up at night?

I had a tough day on Friday.

I was put in a situation where I had to have some conversations that made me angry and frustrated.

One of my visits with someone, and seeing their situation, saddened me.

I’m managing a football team that is lacking players and I don’t want to manage anymore.

My hair is getting greyer.

My waist line is taking its time in slimming down.

My children don’t laugh at my jokes anymore.

I’m tried and lacking energy and nobody loves me, everybody hates me.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!

And in our passage today we see the disciples struggling. Their leader and friend, their spiritual mentor and rabbi, Jesus, keeps saying troubling things. Deeply concerning things.

He’s going to die.

He’s going to be betrayed by one of the tight twelve.

He’s leaving soon.

They can’t go with him.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!

And into these trouble hearts, this inner turmoil, Jesus speaks truth.

Only through Jesus can we believe in God and have the confidence to come to God with what troubles our hearts because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

Pray

The church has a lot of Christian cliché’s.

One-liners that seek to help but aren’t always helpful.

  • When God closes a door, he opens a window.

  • You’re never safer than when you’re in God’s will.

  • Let go and let God.

And when we our hearts are troubled. The first advice that came to mind is the same advice I have found myself giving people…

Give it to God!

What is Jesus’ advice?

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” John 14:1

It begins with belief in God.

If you believe in God then you believe in Jesus, Because Jesus is God.

We can have a firm trust/belief in God the Father because Jesus is God!

Jesus is GOD

If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

John 14:7

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

John 14:9–11

To see Jesus is to see the Father

The Father is in him and he is in the Father

This amazing truth is echo in the first verse of this book of John…

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

And again throughout. An example being John 10:38…

“…that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father” John 10:38

As we have seen in our exploration of the first half of John’s Gospel, Jesus’ signs and actions demonstrate He is the Son of God and the Son of Man. He is God on earth, sent to suffer and die so we can have a restored relationship with God without sin standing in the way.

Jesus is God. God the Son.

Philip makes a wonderful statement.

“Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” John 14:8

We have all asked this question in a range of forms across our lives.

“God, show yourself and I’ll believe in you.”

“God, if I could see you, then I’d believe in you.”

“God, where are you?”

“God if I can’t see you then I can’t believe in you.”

Jesus answer to Philip, to us…

You’re looking at Him!

You are seeing the Father!

The Father and Jesus are one.

They have seen this in Jesus character, in his words, and in the miracles that reveal God’s power.

Jesus is God. God the Son.

You want to see God, look to the Son. Believe!

Only through Jesus can we believe in God and have the confidence to come to God with what troubles our hearts because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

Because Jesus is God.

Yeah but where is God? How do I get to him?

Jesus is the WAY

Jesus answered, “I am the way…” John 14:6
