NO ROOM FOR PICK ‘N’ MIX

July 5, 2016

Through our series so far we have heard strongly James’ call for Christians to live as Christ. James has harsh words to say about favouritism in James 2:1-13. James reminds us again that the subject of our faith, Christ, is our guide in how we are to act as Christians. Favouritism doesn’t reflect Christ because of who Christ is, who we are in Christ, and how we are to live in Christ.

We can have the pick ‘n’ mix mentality when it comes to people. We choose to engage with the ones who we feel most comfortable with, or who are most like me, or who will help me be who I want to be, or get me where I want to go. Pick ‘n’ mix with people. James is very blunt. He calls this favouritism, partiality, bias, prejudice, discrimination.

So why not show favouritism? Because of...

Who Christ is…

“…our glorious Lord Jesus Christ” James 2:1

Christ has the right and place to choose. We don’t. Christ has the right to judge. We don’t. We don’t see or know the hearts of people, as God does, so to choose or judge a person based on their outward appearance is to take over the place of our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.

So why not show favouritism? Because of...

Who we are in Christ…

“My brothers and sisters, believers,,,” James 1:2

As Christ’s representative we are to desire, cling to the things of Christ, as Christ’s representatives. And that can’t be done if we show favouritism.

So why not show favouritism?

To reflect Christ…

“Mercy triumphs over judgment.” James 2:13

As recipients of God’s mercy, I am to show mercy. And that can’t be done if we show favouritism.

As James summarised for us…

If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, “Love your neighbour as yourself,” you are doing right. James 2:8
