JOSEPH:WISE LEADER - Genesis 41:1 - 49

September 20, 2016

Peter Munro lead us further on Sunday into the story of Joseph. A man living God's dream. He explored with us the truth that...

The key to wise Christian leadership is a strong, deep, personal relationship with God.

And in more general terms...

The key to success in the Christian life is a strong, deep, personal relationship with God.

As we explored Genesis 41:1-49, in the first fifteen verses there is no mention of God. But when Joseph speaks, it is clear that God is at the top of his mind. Note Joseph's reaction...

41:16 God will give a favourable interpretation

41:25 God has told you…
41:28 God has shown you…
41:32 the matter is fixed by God

Joseph could have seen an opportunity or chance for freedom. Often our natural reaction is for self preservation or improvement...
"I'm good at interpreting dreams. I have a track record"

But Joseph's reaction is God-centred. God will give an answer. It is all from God.

And the impact on Pharaoh of Joseph was huge. Pharaoh could see that Joseph has a link to God, a strong relationship with God.

So what is our impact on others? The indwelling of the Holy Spirit is the key to us serving God in whatever capacity He has called us to. Our relationship with God should be such that people recognise God working in us.

Practice these things, immerse yourself in them, so that all may see your progress.
1 Timothy 4:15

Joseph showed leadership. Secular leadership theory tells is that we need to...

  • Understand yourself

  • Understand other people and their diversity

  • Change yourself to be the person (leader) you need to be

  • Practice being a leader

Joseph teaches us that the leadership development that saw him go from prisoner to Governor requires...

  • Preparation and formation by God.
In the difficulties, trials. Through smaller leadership tasks. Through character testing. Joseph was faithful in smaller tasks and passed the character test.

So what is your preparation by God?

What is your attitude to trials and difficulties?

What is your performance like in smaller tasks – do you do them as though you are working for the Lord?

Do you pass character tests?

God had a plan for Joseph and developed him for that plan.

God has a plan for you too. Are you allowing Him to develop you for that plan?

As a number of Christian authors reflected...

"He wants to teach us that we minister out of what we are." – Clinton

"The Christian leader of the future is the one who truly knows the heart of God as it has become flesh, “a heart of flesh”, in Jesus." - Nouwen

In the life of Joseph we can see parallels that reveal Christ.

Both undertook major trials and suffering...

  • Joseph – prison to Governor of Egypt

  • Jesus – cross to God’s right hand

Both provided counsel...

  • Joseph – wise counsellor to Pharoah

  • Jesus – Wonderful Counsellor

Both given positions of honour...

  • Joseph – appointed Governor by Pharoah

  • Jesus – appointed and honoured by God

Both meet a need...

  • Go to Joseph – for food during the famine

  • Go to Jesus – “I am the bread of life”

The key to wise Christian leadership is a strong, deep, personal relationship with God.

And in more general terms...

The key to success in the Christian life is a strong, deep, personal relationship with God.

We need to be making a strong, deep personal relationship with God our number 1 priority.

  • Immerse ourself in the Bible

  • Spend time in prayer

  • Allow God to develop us
