Joseph: Son in God’s Sovereign Hand Genesis 50:15-21; 45:5-8; 41:50-52

October 11, 2016

Peter Munro completes our final message in our series on the life of Joseph.

Life is not always easy. There are trials and difficulties in life. And this is reflective in Joseph’s life. He was sold into slavery, accused of attempted rape and thrown into prison.

Throughout it all he was faithful to God and God gave him great success. Part of the story of Joseph was God developing Joseph in his faith and skills to serve God.

Let’s review what we have covered so far…

  • Living God’s Dream – God will accomplish His plans

  • Temptation – Tempted but Faithful

  • Prison – Fruitful in partnership with God

  • Leadership – The key to wise Christian leadership is a strong, deep, personal relationship with God.

  • Meeting his brothers – Forgiveness not revenge.

  • God is sovereign – God intended what happened for good.

The key message today is…

Trials and difficulties are preparing and shaping us for God’s plan

Success in life is a blessing from God. Use it wisely for Him.

In all of our lives we have trials and difficulties, our attitude to those is really important.

We also have elements to success in our lives. What is our attitude to success?

In your daily personal time with God, pray that He would give you the attitude that Joseph had to trails and difficulties and to success and power.

What is the attitude of the brothers? (Genesis 50:15)

They were terrified, had a guilty conscience. They asked for forgiveness first by message and then in person for their own safety.

What was Joseph’s attitude?

When he received the message from his brothers, he cried. He also acknowledged that he couldn’t put himself before God. It was all part of God’s purposes. Joseph was aware of God’s plans and purposes for his life.

He then reassured them that they had nothing to fear.

We don’t always know what God’s plans and purposes are for in our lives. The rest of scripture reflects God’s plans are for the good of those who love Him. (Romans 8:28; 8:31)

Bad things happen to God’s people. All of us have trials and difficulties. But those who love God because of their new life in Jesus Christ have Romans 8:28 as a promise.

God uses bad things to grow our faith and to develop us for the plans He has for our lives.

God had a plan for Joseph and developed him through trials and difficulties. Are you open to God developing you through the trials and difficulties of life?

What was the attitude of Joseph to success?

  • He received two children – he saw them as a blessing from god

  • As governor of Egypt – Joseph attributed all his success as from God.

What do we attribute success in our lives from? Is it from our own efforts and abilities or is it from God?

Close comparison to Joseph and Jesus…

Joseph forgave his brothers for evil

                Jesus forgives us our sins

Joseph showed great love to his brothers

Jesus loved us so much that he died for us

Joseph cared for his brothers

                Jesus cares for us

Trials and difficulties are preparing and shaping us for God’s plan

Success in life is a blessing from God. Use it wisely for Him.

In your daily personal time with God pray that He would give you the attitude that Joseph had to trails and difficulties and to success and power.
