Today we will focus on Proverbs 30 verses 1 to 6
Who wrote this chapter?Agur.
Who was he?His name is mentioned anywhere else in the Bible, but
Chapter 30 is a distinct section of the book of Proverbs which stands alone.
It contains several appeals concerning humility, and warnings against self-exaltation. Agur speaks against arrogance, and foolish pride, while encouraging humility and brokenness.
Pro 30:1 NIV The sayings of Agur son of Jakeh--an oracle: This man declared to Ithiel, to Ithiel and to Ucal:
Pro 30:2 I am the most ignorant of men; I do not have a man's understanding.
Pro 30:3 I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.
Pro 30:4 Who has gone up to heaven and come down? Who has gathered up the wind in the hollow of his hands? Who has wrapped up the waters in his cloak? Who has established all the ends of the earth? What is his name, and the name of his son? Tell me if you know!
Pro 30:5 Every word of God is flawless; he is a shield to those who take refuge in him.
Pro 30:6 Do not add to his words, or he will rebuke you and prove you a liar.
Through God’s Word and by the power of His Holy Spirit we can learn wisdom and to find true knowledge of the Holy One. This speaks of a deep relationship with God.
In this journey that you and I have set out upon (if you are a follower of Christ) we find that God is faithful, and that He can be absolutely trusted. He will never fail.
Underscoring all of this is the extraordinary provision of God’s Word which has been given to us in the Bible. His Word is Flawless (pure, and proven true). The Bible is in fact the living voice of God!
Our God, who is called “the Holy One” is breath-taking in His Majesty and Awesome in His Power.
His love has no limit,
His grace has no measure,
His power has no boundary known unto men;
For out of His infinite riches in Jesus
He gives, and gives, and gives again!
Our God’s generosity is boundless. He has given us His Son!
His wisdom is without parallel, and He is compassionate.
His eye is on the sparrow and I know that He cares for me.
How can we apply the Word of God to our lives?
The book of Proverbs is practical - it guides and teaches the wisdom of God for daily living. It is packed with vital truth. (I am amazed at the depth of truth found in the first 6 verses of Proverbs chapter 30 - our passage for today.)
The full benefit of Proverbs is gained by regularly meditating on its messages. (This is what it is designed for.) Think about what God is saying, chew it over, and then seek to apply it to our lives.
Let’s read Agur’s personal confession: Pro 30:2-3 NIV
(2) I am the most ignorant of men; I do not have a man's understanding.
(3) I have not learned wisdom, nor have I knowledge of the Holy One.
Verses (2-3) are a confession of: ignorance, poor understanding, a lack of wisdom, and finally; acknowledgement of a lack of knowledge of the Holy One. [Here is very wise man!]
He realizes that in his own strength and by his own powers he cannot learn true wisdom or know God.
The Holy One: He is Holy - and we should fear Him
Agar knows that true "wisdom" stems from the fear of the Lord and the "knowledge" "of the Holy One"
Prov 9.10 The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.
The Hebrew words (150 times in OT) for “The Holy One” are
qâdôsh qâdôsh קָדֹשׁ קָדוֹשׁ or literally “Holy Holy”.
This plural form of "holy" expresses the excellence and majesty of God. He is a Being who is utterly different in power, glory, and purity from anything else in the whole universe.
These words “the Holy One”, lead us to the fear of I AM. The fear of I AM is the beginning (or permanent foundation) of knowledge, wisdom and instruction.
Understanding the Fear of the Lord (the fear of I Am) is the central key to the whole book of Proverbs.
The words Fear and I AM cannot be separated from one another. They have a distinct meaning that is both rational and emotional – they speak to the mind and to the heart. They fall upon our whole being. (B Waltke)
A heart, response to the Fear of I AM is expressed through humility, or a brokenness, that hungers to obey the Lord
NB: A God fearing person is a humble person.)
Pro 15:33 ESV The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honour.
Pro 22:4 ESV The reward for humility and fear of the LORD is riches and honour and life.
He is Holy - and we should love Him.
He is the I Am of mount Sinai and the burning bush – we are to love Him and to fear Him. Do love and fear go together? Yes! They speak of the same thing.
We are designed to love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind and strength. And we bow in worship before the Holy One in reverential fear. Holy fear, Humble fear, Obedient fear, and loving fear. The supporting platform of Godly wisdom is the fear of the Lord.
The wise humble themselves before God and His Word in recognition that He holds their lives and deaths in His hands. For the wise; Fear of the Lord, and Love of the Lord, are connected terms.
They believe His promises and love Him.
They believe His warnings and Fear Him.
Charles Bridges put it this way: “The fear of the lord is that affectionate reverence by which the child of God bends himself humbly and carefully to his Father’s laws.

Every Word of God is flawless

The Bible is much more than a collection of revealed truths, - It is the living voice of God.
Jesus highly esteemed the Old Testament Scriptures and assured us of their complete reliability, in whole and in the smallest part.
Jesus said Mat 5:18 NIV I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished.
It should not surprise us that the One who made the universe has also given us His written Word. He loves us and wants to guide and protect us. Without His unique Word we are very ignorant indeed.
Pro 30:6 Do not add to his words,
Keep on the line ….. God has provided us with a map. And we must keep to it. (Mankind has a dangerous tendency to divert from the truth and make up its own map.) The Bible’s reliability cannot be improved upon.
Without the Scriptures our own imagined wisdom runs to foolishness. But with the Scriptures, and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit we can learn - who God is, what He has done for us, and how we can respond to Him and live our lives in fellowship with Him.
