THE CURE FOR A TROUBLED HEART John 14:1-14

February 28, 2018

Only through Jesus can we believe in God and have the confidence to come to God with what troubles our hearts because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

What troubles you? What is it that bounces around in your mind and keeps you up at night?

I had a tough day on Friday.

I was put in a situation where I had to have some conversations that made me angry and frustrated.

One of my visits with someone, and seeing their situation, saddened me.

I’m managing a football team that is lacking players and I don’t want to manage anymore.

My hair is getting greyer.

My waist line is taking its time in slimming down.

My children don’t laugh at my jokes anymore.

I’m tried and lacking energy and nobody loves me, everybody hates me.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!

And in our passage today we see the disciples struggling. Their leader and friend, their spiritual mentor and rabbi, Jesus, keeps saying troubling things. Deeply concerning things.

He’s going to die.

He’s going to be betrayed by one of the tight twelve.

He’s leaving soon.

They can’t go with him.

Ahhhhhhhhhh!

And into these trouble hearts, this inner turmoil, Jesus speaks truth.

Only through Jesus can we believe in God and have the confidence to come to God with what troubles our hearts because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

Read John 14:1-14

Pray

The church has a lot of Christian cliché’s.

One-liners that seek to help but aren’t always helpful.

  • When God closes a door, he opens a window.

  • You’re never safer than when you’re in God’s will.

  • Let go and let God.

And when we our hearts are troubled. The first advice that came to mind is the same advice I have found myself giving people…

Give it to God!

What is Jesus’ advice?

“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me.” John 14:1

It begins with belief in God.

If you believe in God then you believe in Jesus, Because Jesus is God.

We can have a firm trust/belief in God the Father because Jesus is God!

Jesus is GOD

If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”

John 14:7

Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. 11 Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves.

John 14:9–11

To see Jesus is to see the Father

The Father is in him and he is in the Father

This amazing truth is echo in the first verse of this book of John…

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1

And again throughout. An example being John 10:38…

“…that you may know and understand that the Father is in me, and I in the Father” John 10:38

As we have seen in our exploration of the first half of John’s Gospel, Jesus’ signs and actions demonstrate He is the Son of God and the Son of Man. He is God on earth, sent to suffer and die so we can have a restored relationship with God without sin standing in the way.

Jesus is God. God the Son.

Philip makes a wonderful statement.

“Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.” John 14:8

We have all asked this question in a range of forms across our lives.

“God, show yourself and I’ll believe in you.”

“God, if I could see you, then I’d believe in you.”

“God, where are you?”

“God if I can’t see you then I can’t believe in you.”

Jesus answer to Philip, to us…

You’re looking at Him!

You are seeing the Father!

The Father and Jesus are one.

They have seen this in Jesus character, in his words, and in the miracles that reveal God’s power.

Jesus is God. God the Son.

You want to see God, look to the Son. Believe!

Only through Jesus can we believe in God and have the confidence to come to God with what troubles our hearts because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.

Because Jesus is God.

Yeah but where is God? How do I get to him?

Jesus is the WAY

Jesus answered, “I am the way…” John 14:6

The person and work of Jesus serves as a pathway to God the Father.

The way home to God is not a map or a set of directions, but a person—Jesus himself. He is the only way.

If they know Jesus, then they know God.

If you know Jesus, you know God.

Jesus is not one among many ways to God but the only way to God. Jesus is our access to a personal relationship with God.

If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord”, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. Romans 10:9

The only way to be saved is through Jesus. The only way back into right relationship with God is through Jesus.

Jesus was and is the only way to God.

But Jesus is also the way for believers seeking God in troubling times.

Does God seem distant? Do you feel as if God is inaccessible?

I’m not good enough to ask of God.

If I just read my bible more, then I can ask of God

If I just stop sinning then I can ask of God.

I can’t go to God, look at me.

No says Jesus, look at me.

I am the way to the God, the only way to God, because I am God.

As believers we have access to God 24/7 because of Jesus.

But Jesus is also the way for the believer to get to our future hope.

He is the only one who can lead us back to the place he is preparing for us in the very presence of God.

“And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you may also be where I am.” John 14:3

Jesus goes before us. Jesus will return and will take us to participate in face to face fellowship with the Triune God in heaven!

Jesus is the way to glory.

The way home to God is not a map or a set of directions, but a person—Jesus himself. He is the only way.

Only through Jesus can we believe in God and be saved, come to God in our times of trouble and return to our final home, heaven.

But why can I trust what Jesus says?

Jesus is the TRUTH

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth…” John 14:6

Jesus is the truth.

Are any of you an expert on anything?

Jesus is the expert on God the Father.

He knows God unlike anyone else, because he has seen God, because he is God.

Jesus is the truth because, being God, his words carry divine authority. He is speaking as God.

So, if Jesus says…

“No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

Then this is true. This is accurate. This carries divine authority.

We live in a world that runs on deception. Why because we live in a fallen world that has self as the focus. Looking out for number one.

Nd because of this culture of deception, everything that is said and seen we are required to question, challenge and discern if there is any truth in it.

But not with Jesus. There is no deception.

Jesus is the truth because, being God, his words carry divine authority. He is speaking as God. Jesus is God.

But what has Jesus got to offer me that no one else can?

LIFE!

Jesus is the LIFE

Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John 14:6

Jesus is the life.

Jesus is the source and power of life.

A life that is…

  • Abundant
“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10

  • Enlightened
“Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

  • Free and eternal
…but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

And so much more…

Jesus is the source of power and life.

Life in the gift of salvation.

Life in the day to day experience of our Christian walk.

Life in the eternal life a believer will experience with God when this body fails.

Jesus is the source of power and life.

The way, the truth and the life are only found in and through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Therefore, any confidence in knowing the way, the truth and the life is in Jesus Christ.

Jesus is our CONFIDENCE

How can we get to God?

By putting our confidence in Jesus Christ! The way the truth and the life.

“No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

What as believers are we to do with our troubled hearts, our inner turmoil?

Give it God because of Jesus Christ.

Confidence to go to God, through Jesus!

And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it. John 14:13–14

If Jesus is the way, the truth and the life, we can pray to God in Jesus name. “In Jesus’ name” means more than just simply tacking words on at the end of a prayer. Jesus’ name is inseparably tied to his character and mission. So he is asking us to prayer according to His will and instruction, in order that Jesus works may be fulfilled” To pray to the way and the truth and the life in his way and truth and life.

If Jesus is the way the truth and the life, we will have confidence to serve God.

Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. John 14:12

Jesus empowers us as believers to do God’s work on earth. To continue the mission of revealing the way, the truth and the life. Sharing in words and actions, Jesus!

Do you believe that Jesus is the way the truth and the life?

Has this truth saved you?

Do you believe that Jesus is the way the truth and the life?

Does this truth effect how you pray?

Do you believe Jesus is the way the truth and the life?

Does this truth effect the way you share Jesus with others?

Only through Jesus can we believe in God and have the confidence to come to God with what troubles our hearts because Jesus is the way, the truth and the life.
